Exclusive: Nigerian Community in Morocco Rallies Fans Ahead of Super Falcons-Zambia Clash

Following the Super Falcons’ disappointing 3-2 defeat to Malawi, the Nigerian community in Morocco is pressing officials to properly organize fan support ahead of the team’s crucial Group C match against Zambia.

Local supporters hope to turn out in full force at Rabat’s Al Medina Stadium to create a vibrant atmosphere—a stark contrast to the thin crowds at the tournament opener.

Speaking to a Persecondnews correspondent in Rabat on Wednesday, a Nigerian resident Emeka Okafor lamented the dismal turnout at the opening match, noting that you could “practically count every Nigerian” in the stands.

While Malawi’s supporters showed up in force—with over 200 fans making noise long before kickoff—Okafor counted barely 30 Nigerians, mostly officials and media personnel.

He highlighted a stark shift from past tournaments, where community groups received ticket allocations to help organize crowds, adding that this WAFCON has brought “complete silence” from organizers.

Looking ahead, Okafor appealed for urgent action: “Officials need to intensify plans to bring more Nigerians to the stadium for the Zambia match. Most communities and unions are not even aware the competition is taking place because no awareness was created.”

Tournament debutants Malawi shocked the ten-time champions in a wild, five-goal Group C opener at the same venue, powered by a three-goal display from the Chawinga sisters.

Temwa Chawinga broke the deadlock in the 74th minute to put the newcomers 1-0 ahead before Tabitha Chawinga quickly made it 2-0, leaving Nigeria reeling as Malawian attackers carved open a non-existent back four in a bloody, end-to-end contest.

Rasheedat Ajibade restored hope from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 and spark a late fightback, only for Temwa Chawinga to complete her brace and restore the two-goal cushion at 3-1.

Uchenna Kanu pulled another goal back late on to reduce the deficit to 3-2, but it proved too little too late for the defending champions.
