Folarin Balogun produced another match-winning display on Friday to help the United States beat Australia 2-0 and reach the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, collecting his second consecutive Man of the Match award in the process.

The forward’s high-intensity pressing in the early stages proved crucial as he forced Australian defender Cameron Burgess into an own goal in the 11th minute for the opening score.

His constant movement off the ball, strong hold-up play and effective combination with teammates allowed the co-hosts to control proceedings and enjoy superior possession, even without star attacker Christian Pulisic available.

This latest showing built on Balogun’s memorable World Cup debut against Paraguay, where he grabbed two goals in a 4-1 demolition.

The performance made him the first American to score a brace in a World Cup match since 1930 and also earned him his first Man of the Match honour.

Born in New York to Nigerian parents and raised in England, the striker was eligible to represent England, Nigeria or the United States but chose to play his international football for the American team.

With two matches into the group stage, the Nigerian-American forward has quickly become a central figure in the United States squad’s ambitions for a strong showing at the tournament they are co-hosting.
