The successful staging of the Premium Trust Bank Abuja City International Half Marathon serves as a testament to Nigeria’s improved security situation, according to National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko.

Dikko made the statement Saturday at the race’s finish point at the Package A Velodrome in Abuja, where he also commended Nilayo Sports Management for their outstanding organization.

“This race shows that Abuja and Nigeria is safe, yes we might be having challenges but it is never beyond the administration of President Bola Tinubu,” Dikko said, expressing confidence in the government’s efforts to address security concerns.

He praised the partnership between the private and public sectors, saying it was crucial to growing the country’s sporting ecosystem.

Dikko noted that events like the Abuja City Half Marathon provide valuable exposure for young Nigerian athletes, allowing them to compete with elite runners and learn from them.

“When you expose them to this international level, in few years time they will dominate the world,” he said, highlighting the potential benefits of such events.

The NSC Chairman’s remarks followed the sensational performance of Shehu Adamu at the 2025 Abuja City International Half Marathon.

Adamu finished as the first Nigerian athlete across the line, proudly representing the nation in front of top dignitaries.

Running with remarkable determination, Adamu crossed the finish line inside the MKO Abiola Stadium Velodrome to loud cheers from spectators.

His outstanding effort earned him an impressive $4,000 prize as the top-placed Nigerian, along with an additional cash bonus in naira, further rewarding his resilience on the big stage.

Adamu’s achievement was a key highlight of the world-class event, which featured elite competition and inspiring moments.

His triumph stands as a testament to his hard work and dedication, establishing him as an inspiration for young Nigerian athletes.
