Veteran Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu has spoken out about a violent marriage she escaped, using her personal story as a warning to other women against tolerating abuse.
In an emotional interview on Real Life With Aunty Ayo with fellow actress Ayo Adesanya, Nwosu tearfully recounted episodes of repeated physical violence.
This abuse culminated in a pivotal moment: she revealed that she left the relationship and refused to sign the registrar papers the day before the wedding—a choice she firmly believes saved her life.
“I went to the kitchen to boil water, and he broke the kitchen door. I will never forget that day till I die,” Nwosu said.
She described an incident in which her hair was pulled so violently that it bled.
“I didn’t know where I got the strength from, but I picked up a pestle. I was ready to kill him that day and go to jail. My neighbours saw me naked.”
The actress, who also reflected on how her husband begged her to stay after episodes of violence, used the interview to deliver a blunt message to women in abusive relationships: do not give a second chance.
“Don’t fall for any man who beats you and begs you later. Once beaten twice shy. If you take it once, you just be ready to take it for the rest of your life,” she said.
Industry colleagues and viewers who watched the interview praised Nwosu for her candour, saying her willingness to share painful details could help other women recognise abuse and seek help.
“Nobody should be made to believe marriage is a do-or-die affair,” Nwosu said.
Her message: survival and safety must come before the preservation of an abusive union.
