Nigerian football legend Brown Ideye has bid farewell to professional football at 36, marking the end of an illustrious career that spanned nearly two decades.
With a storied past in top-tier clubs across Europe, Asia, and Africa, Ideye’s retirement leaves a void in the sport.
“After much thought and consideration with mixed emotions, I’ve decided to retire from professional football,” Ideye revealed in a heartfelt statement on Wednesday.
Ideye’s career was marked by incredible highs, including winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria.
He expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey, saying, “I thank my family and friends for their unwavering love, support, and understanding till this day.”
Ideye also acknowledged the role of agents, sports journalists, coaches, teammates, and fans in his success.
The former Super Eagles forward played for several prominent clubs, including Dynamo Kyiv, West Bromwich Albion, and Olympiakos.
Ideye’s international career saw him earn 28 caps for Nigeria, scoring six goals.
“This game made me and gave me everything – incredible joy, sad days, the opportunity to travel and see the world, lifelong friendships, and so many unforgettable memories,” he reflected.
Despite retiring from professional football, Ideye vowed that the sport will always remain a part of his life.
“Though my time as a pro-player has come to an end, football will always be a part of my life as I enter my next chapter,” he said.
Persecondnews recalls that Ideye recently took up a role as Director of Player Pathways and Partnerships at Atlantic Business FC, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his football journey.
