The stage is set for a thrilling quarterfinal clash between Nigeria’s D’Tigers and Senegal’s The Lions in the 2025 AfroBasket tournament.
The two teams will face off on Wednesday afternoon, with a spot in the semifinals and an automatic qualification to the FIBA Basketball World Championship on the line.
With five championships in 1968, 1972, 1978, 1980, and 1997, Senegal has a rich history in the AfroBasket competition, along with six silver and five bronze medals.
Nigeria, on the other hand, has won the title once in 2015. They have also earned silver medals in 1997, 1999, 2003, and 2017, and bronze medals in 1995, 2005, and 2011.
Persecondnews reports that the D’Tigers have been in impressive form so far, topping Group B after victories against Madagascar (77–59), Tunisia (87–66), and Cameroon (99–90).
Senegal has also shown their strength, with wins over Uganda (88–53) and Mali (84–70), although they suffered a loss to Egypt (91–77) before bouncing back to beat South Sudan in the playoffs.
The last time these two teams met in a knockout stage was the 2015 AfroBasket semifinal, where D’Tigers edged Senegal 88–79 after overtime before going on to win their first-ever championship.
With Stan Okoye, a member of the 2015 title-winning squad, still on the roster, Nigeria will hope to count on his experience and leadership to dominate their West African rivals.
Both teams are competing for an even bigger prize: an automatic qualification to the FIBA Basketball World Championship.
The match also holds special significance, as it brings back memories of Nigeria’s D’Tigress defeating Senegal in this year’s Women’s AfroBasket semifinals before winning the championship.
