President Bola Tinubu held a closed-door meeting with governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja.

This meeting took place in anticipation of the party’s significant National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for Thursday, July 24.

Led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, the governors said the discussion focused on strengthening the APC and improving its ability to provide effective governance to Nigerians.

“We are here to discuss the upcoming National Executive Committee meeting of our party tomorrow and to also share some ideas with Mr. President on how best to strengthen our party at the grassroots, at the local government, at the state level, and up to the national level,” Uzodimma told reporters after the meeting.

He said the discussion was convivial and focused on serving Nigeria better.

“So, it’s just a convivial discussion with Mr. President towards strengthening our party and to be able to help serve Nigeria better,” he added.

The NEC meeting, now scheduled to hold at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, by 2 pm on Thursday, July 24, is expected to address key party issues, including the nomination of a new national chairman following the resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje in June.

The meeting will also focus on fostering party unity and outlining strategies to strengthen the APC’s leadership and governance framework.

Uzodimma declined to speculate on the potential outcomes of the NEC meeting, saying, “We can’t predict anything until we get there tomorrow.”

However, insiders suggest that the meeting will weigh in on whether the chairmanship should return to the North Central zone, which has been a point of contention.

Senator Tanko Almakura from North Central is reportedly one of the leading contenders for the post.
