A devastating crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Ayetoro early Monday morning has claimed nine lives and injured three other passengers.

About 13 people were involved in the crash which comprised 10 male adults and three female adults.

Persecondnews gathered that of the nine fatalities consisted of six males and three females.

A witness said the accident occurred when the driver reportedly lost control of a Toyota bus with registration no. UYY165ZY about 5:30 am and rammed into a stationary truck marked DKA244XC.

Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

Okpe said: “The fatal crash occurred in the early hours this morning about 0530 hours on Lagos-Ibadan expressway around Ayetoro area.

“A total of 13 people were involved which comprised of 10 male adults and 03 female adults and 09 were recorded killed (06 male and 03 female) while 03 were injured.

“The suspected causes of the fatal crash were excessive speed and fatigue which led to loss of control and the driver rammed into a station truck.

“The injured victims were taken to Famobis Hospital, Mowe, while the deceased were deposited at Idera morgue Sagamu.”

The sector commander expressed concerns by the reckless driving of some drivers, who failed to adhere to speed limits and refused to take the mandatory 15-minute rest after every four hours of driving.

He sympathized with the family of the crash victims and enjoined them to contact Mowe unit command for more information about the crash.

Nigeria has experienced a surge in deadly road accidents since the beginning of the year, leading to substantial loss of lives and property.

Persecondnews had reported that a tragic road accident occurred on Saturday, February 1, on the Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode Expressway in Onipetesi, in the Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 bus passengers

Prior to that, 98 people lost their lives on January 19, while scooping fuel from a crashed tanker at Dikko Junction along the expressway between Niger and Kaduna states.

At least 56 residents sustained varying degrees of burns and were rushed to different hospitals for treatment.

Also on January 25, 2025, a fuel-laden tanker experienced brake failure, fell, and burst into flames, killing at least 21 people and injuring many others along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, specifically at the Ugwu Onyeama axis.
