Just in: Some parts of Abuja to experience 7-hour power outage – TCN

Abuja’s prolonged power outage persists, with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announcing a seven-hour power interruption in parts of the capital city on Friday.

The blackout is necessary for critical maintenance work on two transformers at the Apo 132/33kV Transmission Substation.

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, confirmed in a statement that the maintenance will take place on Saturday, February 22, and Sunday, February 23, 2025, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on both days.

Consequently, several areas will experience a power outage during the maintenance period.

The statement reads: “The Transmission Company of Nigeria informs the public that its maintenance crew will conduct annual preventive maintenance on the 2x100MVA, TR3 & TR4 transformers at the Apo 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Abuja.

“The planned power interruptions are unavoidable, as Abuja DisCo will be unable to receive bulk power supply from the transformers during the maintenance period. Power supply will be restored to the affected areas upon completion of the maintenance exercise.”

According to the statement, Saturday’s power disruptions will affect the National Hospital, G2 Injection Station, Garki, Area 1, and Asokoro for seven hours.

On Sunday, areas including Apo Legislative Quarters, Apo Resettlement, Gudu, Apo Mechanic, and surrounding areas will also experience a seven-hour power outage.

TCN also apologized to affected customers for the inconvenience the power outage may cause.

“Power supply will be restored once the maintenance exercise is completed. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause the affected electricity customers.”

This is not the first time the power company has announced a planned power outage.

Persecondnews recalls that the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) announced on January 3, 2025, that daily power outages would occur from 9 am to 4 pm, and would take place from January 6 to January 20, 2025.

It attributed the power outage to the relocation of the 33KV DC Airport Feeder and 132KV Kukwaba-Apo Transmission Line Towers along the Outer Southern Expressway.

The affected areas were Lugbe & environs, Airport Road, Kapwa, NNPC, Games Village, National Stadium, Eye Clinic, Indoor Complex, Christ Embassy Church, American International School, Spring Court, American Embassy Quarters, EFCC HQ, Coca Cola, Railway, FMC, Parts of Apo.

Others were Gudu, Gbazango & environs, Parts of Kubwa, Bwari & environs, Parts of Jahi, Parts of Jabi, Karu, Nyanya, Mararaba, Keffi and environs, and other parts of Abuja.
