Nigerian comedian and singer Kehinde Otolorin, popularly known as Kenny Blaq, has shared his thoughts on the pressures to join the skit-making industry despite his commitment to stand-up comedy.

Kenny Blaq admitted that while the skit-making scene is flourishing in Nigeria, he believes remaining authentic to one’s strengths is essential for longevity in the entertainment world.

In an exclusive interview with Per Second News, he addressed mounting expectations from fans and colleagues for him to transition to skitmaking.

“Understanding your craft and knowing what works best for you is key to how long you last in the game,” he stated, underscoring the importance of personalizing one’s journey rather than following trends.

Reflecting on some of his peers who have made the switch, Kenny Blaq expressed respect for their success but affirmed his decision to stick with stand-up.

“I have nothing against those who switched to skits and are believed to be making a lot of money,” he explained, “but I’ve built my career around stand-up comedy and intend to stay focused on that.”

The comedian also spoke candidly on the importance of originality, urging fellow comics to prioritize creating unique material.

“It’s disheartening to see comedians prioritize money over passion,” he remarked, adding that such decisions can impact a comedian’s integrity.

He urged others to avoid copying jokes and to instead channel their efforts into fresh content that reflects their true voice.

“When comedians steal jokes, it takes away from their originality,” he said, warning of the negative effects of these shortcuts.

Addressing up-and-coming comedians, Kenny Blaq advised, “Stop seeking validation from people; focus on making a mark for yourself.”

He emphasized that a relentless need for approval can detract from creative growth and hinder a performer’s confidence in their individuality.

Kenny Blaq also clarified that he has no interest in attempting skit-making himself.

“I’m not sure I’d succeed as a skit-maker, even if I have the capacity. It’s just not my thing,” he confessed.

Instead, he shared plans for his upcoming music-comedy festival, “Reckless,” set for December 14 at Onikan Stadium, which he promises will introduce audiences to his art in an innovative way.

Describing the event, Kenny Blaq said: “The concert will show my craft to the world in a new way,” highlighting his intention to stay dedicated to stand-up while bringing fresh dimensions to his performances.

With “Reckless,” Kenny Blaq aims to demonstrate his versatility, remaining committed to his unique brand of comedy while offering fans a different perspective on his talent.
