Former President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has at the Republican National Convention on Monday, selected Ohio Senator JD Vance, a prominent figure on the populist right, as his vice presidential running mate.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator JD Vance of the Great State of Ohio.”
JD Vance’s selection as Trump’s running mate would have been unthinkable when Trump first campaigned for president.
Vance, a venture capitalist and author of the bestselling memoir ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ (later adapted into a Netflix film), was initially a vocal critic of Trump from the conservative side, making his eventual alliance with the former president a surprising turn of events.
In a 2016 interview with Charlie Rose, Vance openly declared, ‘I’m a never-Trump guy, I never liked him.’ At the time, Vance viewed Trump as a deeply flawed candidate, stating, “He’s a terrible candidate.”
He even wondered aloud, in texts to a former roommate, whether Trump was more of “a cynical asshole like Nixon”, or worse, “America’s Hitler”.
Vance has since undergone a remarkable shift, evolving into a prominent figure in the MAGA movement and a close associate of Trump.
He has embraced some of Trump’s more controversial views, including challenging the legitimacy of the 2020 election results and advocating for the purging of federal civil servants if Trump were to be re-elected, as stated in a 2021 podcast interview.
Vance’s reaction to the attempted assassination at a Trump rally on Saturday was striking.
On social media platform X, he posted: “The core message of the Biden campaign is that Trump is a dangerous authoritarian who must be stopped at all costs. This inflammatory rhetoric directly led to the attempt on Trump’s life.”
Vance previously sought Trump’s endorsement during his campaign for the US Senate seat in Ohio.
To win over Trump’s supporters, Vance adopted a right-wing populist stance, emulating Trump’s style.
He denounced ‘elites’, posted provocative tweets about crime in New York City, promoted the controversial ‘great replacement’ theory on Tucker Carlson’s show, and even grew a beard.
However, his efforts were met with criticism from the Club for Growth, a conservative organization that accused Vance of being an opportunist, highlighting his past criticisms of Trump as evidence of his insincerity.”
Peter Thiel, a tech billionaire and early backer of Vance’s venture capital firm, injected unprecedented funds into Vance’s campaign, which was further bolstered by Trump’s endorsement.
This support propelled Vance to victory in the primary and ultimately led to his triumph over former Democratic Congressman Tim Ryan in the November 2022 general election, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in the MAGA movement.
Since taking office, Vance has consistently embraced the populist right ideology, challenging US involvement in foreign conflicts and supporting conservative domestic policies.
Notably, in 2023, he proposed legislation aimed at designating English as the official language of the United States, further solidifying his stance on the far-right spectrum.
