Sen. Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, declared on Wednesday that he expects food prices to significantly decrease within the next 180 days, amid nationwide protests against food insecurity.
Kyari took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to share a series of initiatives that will be rolled out in the next 180 days.
He wrote: “Our administration has unveiled a series of strategic measures aimed at addressing the high food prices currently affecting our nation. These measures will be implemented over the next 180 days.”
He detailed a comprehensive plan, outlining specific strategies and initiatives to be implemented during the 180-day timeframe.
Kyari announced a temporary exemption from duties, tariffs, and taxes on the importation of specific essential food items, including maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas, effective immediately for all imports through both land and sea borders.
He wrote: “Imported food commodities will be subjected to a Recommended Retail Price (RRP). We understand concerns about the quality of these imports, especially regarding their genetic composition.”
Kyari said the government guarantees strict adherence to rigorous standards, ensuring the imported food products meet the highest levels of safety and quality.
He wrote: “FG will import 250,000 metric tons of wheat and 250,000 metric tons of maize. These semi-processed commodities will be supplied to small-scale processors and millers across the country.
“Engagement with relevant stakeholders to set a GMP and purchase surplus food commodities to restock the National Strategic Food Reserve.”
