A Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, who killed his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, has an appointment with the hangman.
This is the verdict of a Kano State High Court on Tuesday, as it found the Chinese guilty as charged.
Quangrong, who murdered his girlfriend following a misunderstanding, was convicted on one count of culpable homicide.
In his testimony on Tuesday, Quangrong claimed that he stabbed his girlfriend in self-defence after she allegedly grabbed his testes in September 2022.
“I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but stabbed her in self-defence after she grabbed my testes,” Ouangrong said.
Delivering judgment, Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond any reasonable doubt.
“The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I hereby find him guilty.
“I hereby recommend mercy by the Kano State Governor on behalf of the convict,” he ruled.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, led by Kano State Attorney-General, Mr. Haruna Dederi, had informed the court that the convict committed the offence on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters, Kano.
He said on the same date, at about 9 p.m., the convict stabbed the deceased with a knife in her house, situated at Janbulo Quarters, Kano, for an undisclosed reason.
“The victim was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor,” he said.
The prosecution presented six witnesses to prove their case against the defendant and four exhibits.
The offence contravened the provisions of Section 221(b) of the Penal Code, laws of Northern Nigeria.
Following the verdict, the deceased’s mother, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, saying the ruling serves as a testament to the pursuit of justice for victims of violent crimes.
