With the African Cup of Nations set to  kick off a week from now, President Bola Tinubu has cleared all outstanding debts the Federal Government is owing the Super Eagles and all other national teams of the country.

According to a post on X from the Tinubu’s Media Centre on Sunday, the 15 months unpaid salary of Jose Peseiro and his backroom staff and all the allowances and bonuses due to the senior national team players have been cleared by the President.

Peseiro’s initial contract with the country’s apex football authority (NFF) was agreed at $70,000 a month, but after the expiration of his initial contract in July 2023, it was gathered that his monthly pay in his new contract was slashed to $50,000 after the federation said they could no longer afford his previous salary.

The statement reads: “President @officialABAT has approved the payment of N12 billion outstanding backlog for Nigeria’s National teams of various sports, which includes Super Eagles and others.

“The payment entails the clearing of the senior national team coach salaries running up to 15 months, payments of allowances and promises due to the senior national teams, females, and Under-20 national team.

“This is coming at a time when the Super Eagles of Nigeria are preparing to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations, which is billed to start later this month.”
