The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) has fixed September 6 to decide the fate of the petitioners challenging President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25, 2023 presidential poll.
Umar Bangari, the Registrar of the Court of Appeal, said on Monday that the proceedings will be open to live broadcast by interested media house.
Persecondnews recalls that Tinubu defeated 17 other candidates who took part in the election, scoring the highest 8,794,726 votes, thus meeting the first constitutional requirement to be declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He also scored over 25 percent of the votes cast in 30 states, more than the 25 states constitutionally required.
Atiku polled a total of 6,984,520 votes in the election, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party came third in the election with a total of 6,101,533 votes and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP came fourth with 1,496,687 votes.
Not satisfied with the outcome and declaration by the INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu, the petitioners claimed that Tinubu was indicted for drug trafficking in the United States of America and that the President failed to secure 25 percent of votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory.
Judgment is also expected to be delivered by election tribunals in 25 states for governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly election petitions.
