President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday conferred the national honor of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) on the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.
Vice-President-elect, Sen. Kashim Shettima also received the Grand Commander of Order of the Niger (GCON).
The investiture ceremony was held at the State House, Abuja, as part of events marking the inauguration of Tinubu and Shettima on May 29 as President and Vice-President.
Persecondnews reports that the nation’s highest national award of GCFR is exclusively reserved for Presidents.
The only exception was the conferment of GCFR on the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) Presidential Candidate in the 1979 and 1983 elections which was won by the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) candidate, Alhaji Shehu Shagari.
Shagari had bestowed the national honor on Awolowo, his closest rival, who challenged the results in the Supreme Court.
