The United Kingdom is set to announce stiffer sanctions for foreign students to curb the surge of students taking advantage of loopholes in the UK immigration policy to piggyback on their relative’s student visa.
According to recent reports from official figures, net migration into the UK has shattered the glass ceiling of 1 million with foreign students bringing in 135,788 family members to Britain last year, nine times more than in 2019.
Persecondnews gathered that in 2022, Nigeria has the highest number of dependants accompanying persons with study visas for the year.
The report states that 59,053 Nigerian students brought over 60,923 relatives, ranked as the highest nationals with the most sponsored study grants.
Most Nigerians opt for UK because of the language factor, and also the UK Master’s program which is nine to 12 months, compared to the 18 months in the United States.
The new policy will curtail the influx of migrants into the UK, and restrict masters students and many other post,-grads from bringing family over.
The new restrictions will be announced on Tuesday or Wednesday and it will exclude P.hD students, whose courses usually last between 3 and 5 years and are highly skilled.
The report said: “Rishi Sunak is expected to come out fighting on immigration – pointing out they are figures he inherited as they date back to the year ending December 2022 – two months after he became PM.
