Thursday morning’s Lagos State Government staff bus-train collision in Ikeja area of Lagos, has so far claimed six lives with 79 others sustaining various degree of injuries.
The casualty figures were disclosed to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu during a visit to victims of the accident at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja on Thursday afternoon.
Persecondnews reported that two women died on the spot when the bus conveying Lagos State Government workers collided with a train at rail crossing at PWD area of
Ikeja.
The staff bus marked No. 33 was conveying the workers from Isolo to Alausa, the seat of government, when the accident happened.
Sanwo-Olu told newsmen during the visit to LASUTH that 85 people were involved in the accident out of which 42 had moderate injuries, 29, serious injuries, eight with mild injuries, while six people had died so far.
He has declared a day of mourning in the state, saying work stops at noon tomorrow for all civil servants in the state and directed that national and state flags should be at half mast, tomorrow, Friday, 10th March.
The governor also directed that all campaign activities be suspended for the next three days.
He commended all responders, staff of LASUTH and LASUCOM, security agencies for their prompt response.
Sanwo-Olu also lauded the governorship candidates of PDP and the Labour Party, Dr Jide Adediran and Mr Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour for visiting the victims.
“Investigation is ongoing, and I appeal and encourage public spirited Nigerians to come forward voluntarily and donate blood to re-stock the blood bank,” he said.
