With the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) still undecided and adamant, the two other unions in the nation’s tertiary institutions — the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions, (NASU) — have suspended their industrial action.

Consequently, the unions have directed their members to resume work on Wednesday, August 24, 2022.

Confirming this on Saturday, SSANU’s National President, Mr Muhammed Ibrahim, said the industrial action has been suspended for two months.

Persecondnews recalls that both SANNU and NASU had been on strike for about four months to pressure the Federal Government for a better condition of service.

ASUU had embarked on strike since February 24, 2022, making about 188 days of shutting down the nation’s public universities.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu announced on Saturday that the government had earmarked N50 billion to settle earned allowances for members of SSANU, NASU and ASUU .

SSANU and NASU had in March embarked on a nationwide strike over what it called the nonchalant attitude of the government to their demands.

About two days ago, a meeting between the Federal Government and ASUU had deadlocked following the government’s insistence on “no work, no pay” rule for the striking university teachers.

The lecturers had asked government to pay the six months salaries during the period of the strike as a condition for calling off the action.
