After 16 months of trial for violently raping and killing a graduate job-seeker, a dare-devil Uyo boy, Uduak Akpan, is to get the hangman’s knot.
For snuffing life out of Iniubong Umoren, a graduate of Philosophy from the University of Uyo, Justice Bassey Nkanang of an Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo, sentenced Akpan to death by hanging.
Handing down the death verdict on Thursday, the judge also sentenced Akpan to life imprisonment for rape.
Persecondnews reports that the judge, however, discharged and acquitted his father, Frank Akpan, and his sister, Anwan Bassey of criminal conspiracy.
The killing of Umoren had hit the airwaves and the social media in April 2021, as Akpan lured her to his family residence at Nung Ikono Obio village in Uruan Local Government Area of the state on the pretext of giving her a job.
Akpan raped, murdered, and buried her in a shallow grave in the father’s compound.
Umoren was in search of job while her mobilization for the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme was being delayed because of COVID-19.
The body was later exhumed from the shallow grave by the Police team, who were guided by the prime suspect.
Finding Akpan guilty of rape in the over two-hour judgment, the judge said the prosecution has proved beyond doubt the case of rape and murder against Akpan.
Persecondnews also reports that immediately the judge delivered the death sentence, the convicted rapist attempted to escape from the courtroom but was overpowered by security officials.
