A couple who allegedly dug up a corpse and dismembered it with others still on the run, is facing trial in Osun State.

The 60-year-old husband, Ashifat Okunade and his wife, Mariam, were caught severing the head and hands of the corpse after they have successfully exhumed it, reports Persecond News.

Police have hauled up the couple before a magistrate court in Osogbo for the crime, punishable under Section 242 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State 2002.

The coupled was arraigned in March 2020, but the prosecution substituted the charge with a new one.

According to Police Prosecutor John Idoko, the couple with two others still at large, committed the offences on March 21, 2020 at 1.00pm at Dagbolu area of Ifon in Osun by cutting the head and hands of interred Rasheed Tiamiyu.

The duo pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of conspiracy and indecent interference with the dead.

Counsel to the accused, Mr Yemisi Akintajuwa, pleaded with the magistrate to admit them to bail while the trial continues.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Dr Olusegun Ayilara, said the accused should continue to enjoy the bail earlier given to them in the previous charge.

Hearing in the case has been adjourned until January 8, 2021.
