The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill seeking to upgrade the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi in Edo State to the City University of Technology.

The two other bills passed are the Nigerian Maritime University Okerenkoko, Delta and the Federal College of Education, Giwa, Kaduna.

PerSecondnews recalls that Yaba College of Technology in Lagos and Kaduna Polytechnic were upgraded to universities in the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo and have yet to take off.

The passage of the bills followed consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TetFund presented by the Chairman, Sen. Babba Kaita during Wednesday’s plenary.

The bill on the Nigeria Maritime University was sponsored by Sen. James Manager (PDP-Delta) while the bills on University of Technology, Auchi and Federal College of Education, Giwa, were sponsored by Sen. Francis Alimikhena (APC-Edo) and Sen. Uba Sani (APC- Kaduna).

Kaita said the Federal Polytechnic Auchi was currently running degree programmes in affiliation with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra with an enrollment of over 50, 000 students in full and part time.

He explained that upgrading the institution to a federal university would provide training for high skills in the areas of technical and vocational education.
