Police clash with violent Shiite protesters in Abuja

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), again clashed with the police  on Monday with sounds of gunfire in Abuja.

The incidence sparked panic among residents and other road users who hurriedly moved to avert being caught in the crossfire.

According to eye witness account, members of the Shiites trooped out in large number around the road leading to the National Assembly and the Central Business District when the police swooped on them, firing tear gas canisters to disperse them.

” There is a violent protest currently ongoing by members of the El-Zakzakky Group in some parts of the FCT – particularly the Central Business District and the Three Arms Zone, the Nigerian Police said on its website. “The Police are taking adequate measures to bring the situation under control, it said.
