Dick Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, has died at the age of 84.

Cheney served under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009 and was a key figure in shaping the country’s foreign policy, particularly in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

“He was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honour, love, kindness, and fly fishing,” his family said in a statement.

“We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”

Cheney’s tenure as Vice President was marked by his advocacy for the previous Iraq War, a decision that has been widely criticized.

Cheney’s family said he passed away on Monday night, surrounded by loved ones, due to complications from pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.

Cheney’s legacy is complex, with critics pointing to his role in the Iraq War and supporters praising his commitment to conservative values.

In his later years, Cheney became a vocal critic of Donald Trump and even endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
