Tinubu Confers National Honour on Ex-INEC Chairman Yakubu

429

The decade-long leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by Professor Mahmood Yakubu has ended, following President Bola Tinubu’s acceptance of his departure.

Since starting his tenure in November 2015, Yakubu oversaw significant electoral reforms, most notably introducing technology-driven processes like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electronic result transmission.

According to Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy in a statement on Tuesday, Tinubu thanked Yakubu for his services to the nation and his efforts to sustain Nigeria’s democracy, particularly through the organisation of free and fair elections throughout his two-term tenure.

As a mark of appreciation for his dedication, Tinubu conferred on Yakubu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Following Yakubu’s exit, the President directed him to hand over the reins of the commission to the most senior National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive successor.

Yakubu has since handed over to Agbamuche-Mbu as the acting chairperson of INEC.

This transition ensures continuity in the leadership of INEC as the commission prepares for upcoming off-cycle elections and further reforms in Nigeria’s electoral process

During his tenure, Yakubu oversaw the 2019 and 2023 general elections, introducing innovations such as the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

His leadership was marked by efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy through credible elections.
