The National Sports Commission (NSC) has taken a significant step towards promoting gender inclusivity in sports administration by recognizing the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN) in the governance structure of National Sports Federations (NSF).

Persecondnews reports that this move aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) agenda of enhancing women’s participation in sports governance.

According to the NSC, this move highlights Nigeria’s dedication to international standards and gender equality in sports administration.

The statement, released Friday by Dr. Kehinde Ajayi, NSC Director of Press, noted that the inclusion of AFFAN shows that “those who brought Nigeria medals and glory must also be entrusted with shaping the structures that will produce tomorrow’s champions.”

NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade have been advocating for this inclusive approach to the Commission’s leadership.

“This move is expected to create new opportunities for women in governance and tap into the wealth of knowledge, discipline, and inspiration of Nigeria’s former female athletes.

“The NSC’s decision to include AFFAN in the governance structure of NSF is a testament to its commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and sustainable growth in Nigerian sports.

“By increasing women’s representation on the boards of national sports federations, the NSC aims to not only comply with global best practices but also expand leadership opportunities for former female athletes who have proudly represented the country on national and international stages,” the statement said.

The NSC has approved AFFAN’s representation on the boards of national sports federations in the forthcoming elections.

This development is expected to have a positive impact on Nigerian sports, promoting gender inclusivity and empowering women to take on leadership roles in sports administration.
