Nigeria has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2nd African School Games, scheduled to take place in 2027.

The announcement was made in Algiers after a competitive bidding process, with Nigeria emerging victorious over other strong contenders, including South Africa and Kenya.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr. Bukola Olopade, expressed pride and excitement over Nigeria’s achievement, saying, “This is a huge win for Nigeria and for the future of sports development on the continent.

“Our successful bid is a testament to the unhinged commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to sports excellence.”

According to Dr. Kehinde Ajayi, the Director of Press at NSC on Tuesday, Olopade noted the significance of hosting the games, reiterating that it will not only showcase Nigeria’s capabilities but also contribute to the growth of the sports economy and enhance the country’s international image.

“In 2027, Nigeria will deliver an unforgettable experience for young athletes from across the continent,” he added.

Nigeria’s successful bid was attributed to its recent track record of hosting top-tier competitions, including the National Sports Festival and the 3rd CAA Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championships.

The NSC Director General assured that preparations will commence immediately to ensure the highest standards, commending the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) for the confidence reposed in Nigeria.

The Nigerian delegation, led by Olopade and President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, played a crucial role in securing the hosting rights.
