The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has mourned the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a distinguished leader who served as the committee’s Grand Patron for three tenures.

In a condolence message on Tuesday by the NOC Public Relations Officer, Tony Nezianya, the committee noted that during Buhari’s leadership, Nigerian sports experienced a glorious era, with notable achievements that still resonate today.

Persecondnews reports that one of such achievement was Nigeria’s historic victory at the inaugural FIFA Kodak U-16 World Cup in China in 1985.

“As Head of State, Buhari promised the victorious team and their handlers houses to reward their monumental achievement.

“Decades later, during his presidency, this long-standing promise was fulfilled. This dedication is a remarkable quality in leadership,” said Habu Ahmed Gumel, President of NOC.

Gumel lauded President Buhari’s unwavering support for athletes, saying, “President Buhari kept faith with destiny and never toyed with the desires of sportsmen and women, who brought laurels to the country. Challenges endured, and they received their dues during his lifetime.”

This commitment has undoubtedly remained a motivating initiative for today’s athletes, encouraging them to strive for excellence, the statement said.

NOC extended its heartfelt condolences to the Federal Government, the people of Nigeria, and President Buhari’s immediate family.

Gumel offered prayers, asking Allah to forgive President Buhari’s shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus, the highest level of paradise.

The NOC emphasized its commitment to preserving and honouring President Buhari’s impactful legacy of leadership and unwavering support for Nigerian sports.
