The community of Gondomar, a town near Porto in Northern Portugal, is preparing to bid farewell to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool footballer, and his younger brother, André Filipe Teixeira da Silva.

The funeral services for the brothers, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain, will take place on Saturday at 10am.

Initially, the funeral was scheduled for Friday at 4pm, but due to some minor paperwork issues that needed to be resolved, the services have been postponed until Saturday morning.

The family, still in Spain, had to finalize some documents before the bodies could be repatriated.

According to Father Jose Manuel Macedo, a wake will be held at São Cosme Chapel, followed by a funeral mass at the nearby Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, the town’s main Catholic church.

Gondomar holds a special place in Diogo Jota’s heart, as it is where he began his football career at a local club and met his wife.

The news of the brothers’ passing sent shockwaves through the football world, with many paying tribute to Diogo Jota’s memory.

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, club legend Sir Kenny Dalglish, and current manager Arne Slot were among those who expressed their condolences.

Liverpool players, including Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, also shared emotional messages, remembering Diogo Jota’s smile, love for the game, and companionship.

As the football world mourns the loss of a talented player, the funeral services on Saturday will provide a moment of final farewell for Diogo Jota and his brother.
