The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has congratulated Nigeria’s flag football teams on their historic double victory at the inaugural International Federation of American Football (IFAF) African Flag Football Championship.
Persecondnews reports that the men’s team won 13-12 against hosts Egypt, while the women’s team triumphed 26-12 over Morocco.
Olopade lauded the teams’ performance, saying the victory is a testament to the potential of flag football in the country.
In a statement on Wednesday by the Special Assistant on Media, Office of the DG, Kola Daniel, Olopade commended the President of the Nigeria Flag Football Federation, Babajide Akeredolu, for his outstanding contributions to the development of the sport in Nigeria.
“The time, money, and energy you invested in these teams clearly demonstrates your deep commitment to Nigerian sports,” Olopade said.
“You have brought a new dimension to the development of flag football, and for this, you deserve a national honour.”
The NSC DG had earlier expressed support for a potential synergy between the Nigerian American Football Association (NAFA) and Showtime Flag Football League, saying it could lead to a robust league across the country.
“If this partnership materializes, I am confident that flag football will capture the imagination of Nigerians,” Olopade said.
The victory has earned both teams automatic qualification for the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.
The championship marked a significant milestone in the rise of flag football on the African continent and globally, with the sport set to debut at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
