Kanu’s Broadcasts Incited Violence, Witness Says, Citing Gulak’s Death, Others

A prosecution witness on Thursday told the court in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed IPOB, that Kanu’s public broadcasts fueled violent acts, citing the assassination of former presidential advisor Ahmed Gulak and others.

The witness, led by senior advocate Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, presented testimony via a recorded session to Justice James Omotosho.

The witness contended that Kanu’s broadcast, which instructed his followers to “deal with” individuals who disobeyed his sit-at-home order, had a direct connection to the killing of Gulak on May 30, 2021.

However, Kanu denied any involvement in violence, maintaining his movement is peaceful and asserting that IPOB “cannot engage in any criminal activities”.

He admitted to running a radio program but denied his broadcasts were linked to Lagos killings during EndSARS protests, arguing Lagos is not part of Biafran territory.

The prosecution’s witness, codenamed BBB, claimed the video evidence linked Kanu to violent acts, including the burning of police stations and the beheading of officers in Lagos.

The court was informed that Kanu admitted founding the Eastern Security Network(ESN), citing security concerns in the Southeast region.

The defence counsel, Mr. Paul Erokoro (SAN), objected to the admissibility of the video, requesting time to consult further.

After lawyers for both parties reached an agreement, Justice Omotosho adjourned the case until May 14, 21, and 22 for continuation of hearing.

Persecondnews recalls that Kanu has been in DSS detention in Abuja since he was rearrested in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition back to Nigeria on June 27, 2021.
