Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory have called off their three-day warning strike, effective Wednesday evening.

Persecondnews recalls that the doctors had embarked on a three-day warning strike on Tuesday, protesting the dismissal of 127 health workers and unpaid salaries of health staff.

They also demanded the full reinstatement of the dismissed workers, payment of withheld salaries and the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Dr Emeka Ezeh.

The doctors threatened to embark on a full-scale industrial action, should the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, fail to meet their demands by Friday, May 9.

Dr. George Ebong, the President of the association confirmed the suspension of the strike on Wednesday, after an emergency virtual recess meeting held by members of the association.

According to him, the resolution followed the reinstatement of previously dismissed health workers by the FCT Administration, and the payment of a portion of their outstanding salaries.

Ebong disclosed that the administration had pledged to address the remaining unmet demands while commending the FCT Minister and his team for their intervention.

“We called off the warning strike after some of our demands were met. Most of our members have received their unpaid salaries and have been reinstated.

“We strongly hope that the rest of the members affected are paid by tomorrow to prevent further disruption of work in the health sector.

“We thank the FCT Health Mandate Secretary, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, and Chidi Amadi, Chief of Staff to FCT Minister Wike, for their swift intervention,” he said.
