In a significant boost for Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk has demonstrated his loyalty by signing a new two-year contract.

The Dutch defender’s commitment comes on the heels of Mohamed Salah’s contract extension, providing stability and reassuring fans of the team’s core strength.

The 33-year-old Dutch centre-back expressed his joy and pride at signing the new deal, stating, “I am very happy, very proud… It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible.

Van Dijk has been instrumental in Liverpool’s resurgence as a top-tier team in English and European football since joining from Southampton in January 2018 for a world-record fee of £75 million for a defender.

During his time at Liverpool, Van Dijk has made 314 appearances, scoring 27 goals, and has won numerous titles, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Club World Cup.

He has also received individual accolades, such as the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2019 and being selected in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year four times.

Van Dijk’s new contract is seen as a proof to his enduring quality and the strong partnership he’s developed with Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot.

According to reports, Slot has “unlocked a new level” in Van Dijk’s game, with the Dutchman adapting his style to play out from the back more and vary his distribution.

Van Dijk has applauded Slot’s leadership, saying, “The way he handles good and difficult moments… has really been a good thing to see and also gave me a lot of confidence towards what the next two years could look like.”

The club is currently 13 points clear of Arsenal with six games remaining.
