Gunners Look to Seal Quarterfinal Spot Against Real Madrid

"A win over Real Madrid would put Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals for only the third time in their history"

Arsenal’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Wednesday is a make-or-break moment for Mikel Arteta’s team.

With a 3-0 lead from the first leg, the Gunners are favorites to reach the semi-finals, but their entire season hangs in the balance.

Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes have all but vanished, with Liverpool 13 points ahead after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on Saturday.

“We still have six games to play in the Premier League, which are going to be really important, for sure,” Arteta said after the Brentford match. “But, for now, it’s all about Wednesday.”

Arteta’s team selection reflected his priorities, with five changes to the side that beat Madrid, including winger Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Odegaard being left out of the starting lineup.

Arsenal’s season has been marked by inconsistency, with 12 draws in the Premier League and just two wins in their past seven games.

Despite their stumbles, the Gunners are almost certain to secure one of the five qualification places for next season’s Champions League.

However, slipping below second would dent their pride and challenge the perception that they are making relentless progress towards their first Premier League title since 2004.

“We want to be higher, that’s for sure,” Arteta said, acknowledging the distance between Arsenal and Liverpool in the league table.

“It is difficult because obviously there are a lot of reasons why we are with that distance and the amount of things that we have to deal with.”

A win over Real Madrid would put Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals for only the third time in their history.

However, the 15-time European champions have a reputation for defying logic in the competition, and Arteta won’t breathe easily until the final whistle.

Even if the Gunners progress, they’ll face tough opponents in Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, both of whom are expected to reach the semi-finals.

The stakes are high for Arsenal, with the risk of ending the season without major silverware for a fifth straight season.

Arteta’s team will need to rise to the challenge against Real Madrid to make club history and keep their season alive.
