Breaking: Supreme Court removes Abure as Labour Party National Chairman

1.2k

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court on Friday removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), setting aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that had recognized Abure as the chairman.

In a unanimous judgment, a five-member panel of the apex court held that the appellate court lacked the jurisdiction to make such a declaration, given that the substance of the case is about the internal leadership of the party, Persecondnews reports.

The court said that party leadership matters are internal affairs, falling outside the judiciary’s jurisdiction, as they are not justiciable disputes that can be adjudicated by the courts.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court upheld the appeal filed by Sen. Esther Nenadi Usman and another party member, is meritorious.

The court also observed that Abure’s tenure as LP chairman had already expired based on the submissions presented, leading to the dismissal of the cross-appeal filed by his faction.
