In a welcome development, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has begun disbursing the raised monthly allowance of N77,000 to corps members across the country.
This payment comes after months of anticipation and advocacy by serving corps members and stakeholders.
Ms. Victoria Bassey, a corps member, confirmed to Persecondnews correspondent after receiving her N77,000 payment on Wednesday in Abuja, expressing her joy and relief.
“I am so happy that we have been paid the promised N77,000, it came at the right time,” she said.
Bassey, however, noted that not all corps members have received the enhanced allowance with some still awaiting alerts.
Persecondnews recalls that the Federal Government had increased the corps members’ allowance from N33,000 to N77,000 in September 2024, but the implementation was delayed due to some logistics.
Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande assured that serving corps members and those in the scheme when the increment was announced would receive backdated payments.
“The backlog, we will work on it and make sure it is paid. It may not be immediate, but it will happen,” Olawande said.
This development is a significant milestone for the NYSC, which has been working to improve the welfare of corps members for several years.
The increased allowance is expected to boost the morale and motivation of corps members as they serve the nation as well as bring some relief economically.
