Tinubu Urges Governors, Leaders to Prioritize the Poor, Vulnerable

"Political leaders' efforts are crucial in meeting citizens' expectations and commended the people-oriented policies that have started yielding positive results in improved human development indexes and economic indicators"

President Bola Tinubu made an impassioned plea to Nigeria’s political leaders, including governors, to shift their focus and resources towards supporting the poor and vulnerable.

This call to action came on Monday night in Abuja, where the President hosted a Ramadan fast-breaking dinner at the State House, attended by governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, Service Chiefs, and other key stakeholders.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of selfless leadership, urging leaders to prioritize the welfare of citizens, particularly during challenging economic times.

He commended the people-oriented policies that have started yielding positive results in improved human development indices and economic indicators.

The President attributed the success of economic reforms to the collective effort of members of the Federal Executive Council and the collaboration of leaders at the subnational levels.

Tinubu encouraged leaders to see themselves as navigators who will bring the country to the promised land, emphasizing the need for unity and a coordinated approach to addressing socio-economic challenges.

He urged leaders to focus on leaving a lasting legacy and to continue working diligently for the benefit of their constituents.

“I thank you all for responding to this invitation. You honoured it out of respect, not because you don’t have enough to eat or share,” President Tinubu said, noting the importance of selflessness and working for the people’s benefit.

He noted that political leaders’ efforts are crucial in meeting citizens’ expectations and commended the people-oriented policies that have started yielding positive results in improved human development indexes and economic indicators.

“I recall in our first FEC meeting, I said we were going to work hard to fetch water from a dry well. We are still working hard to ensure that there is water to drink and that we spend money, not the people,” he said.

The Nigerian leader urged leaders to work for posterity, so that history will remember them for good. “Look at yourselves as navigators that will bring the country to the promised land.

“Standing here as President is a great honour, and you can’t trade it. Continue doing what you are doing. And do more for the people,” he added.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, thanked the President for the bold and decisive reforms of the Nigerian economy.

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), also noted that the prices of goods and foodstuffs were steadily dropping, and the reforms had improved livelihoods.
