Tensions are running high at the Lagos State House of Assembly, with journalists being barred from entering the complex on Monday morning, ahead of a scheduled plenary session.

Reporters, who attempted to enter the complex around 11am, were turned back by security operatives.

The heightened security measures come amid a fierce leadership battle between current Speaker Mojisola Meranda and her embattled predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa.

The Lagos Assembly has been embroiled in turmoil since Obasa’s removal as Speaker on January 13, and things took a dramatic turn when he staged a comeback on February 27, presiding over a brief plenary session with only four lawmakers present.

A policeman at the entrance gate told the reporters: “You are not allowed to enter.”

When informed that journalists had been invited to cover the plenary, he responded, “That is the instruction. You cannot enter.”

At the time of this report, journalists gathered outside the assembly complex that is heavily guarded by a joint team of police officers, civil defence personnel, and Lagos State Neighbourhood Security Corps officials.

Police have blocked the roads leading to the assembly, specifically at Mobolaji Johnson Avenue and the main entrance gate, effectively sealing off access to the complex.

Persecondnews had reported that Obasa was removed as Speaker of the House on January 13, 2025, in a unanimous decision by his colleagues while he was away in the United States.

Following his removal, Ms. Mojisola Meranda was sworn in as the new Speaker.

Persecondnews gathered that Monday’s plenary session is scheduled to take place at 1 pm.
