The Minister of Power, Dr. Adebayo Adelabu along with key stakeholders from Nigeria’s power sector, has concluded a three-day visit to Japan.

The visit, coordinated by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aimed to strengthen Nigeria-Japan energy partnerships, with a focus on enhancing power infrastructure and grid reliability.

The delegation held high-level discussions with Japanese energy leaders and policymakers.

The officials also explored Japan’s energy market, regulatory frameworks, and electricity management systems, aiming to adapt these lessons to Nigeria’s evolving power sector.

A major focus was on Japan’s electricity management and system operations, including advanced load dispatching, generation coordination, and grid optimization areas that could benefit Nigeria’s power sector reforms.

In addition, the Nigerian team examined Japan’s energy trading and market operations, identifying models that could improve Nigeria’s electricity market efficiency and competitiveness.

The insights are seen as pivotal for improving energy pricing and market operations in Nigeria, according to Adelabu.

Key bilateral meetings were held with the Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry and JICA leadership, exploring deeper collaborations to drive Nigeria’s power sector reforms and investments.

The delegation also visited leading Japanese energy facilities, including DAIKIN Solution Plaza and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).

The visits focused on energy-efficient cooling solutions and advanced grid management strategies that could be adopted in Nigeria.

Persecondnews reports that concrete outcomes from the visit included short-term measures to improve grid reliability and potential co-financing for the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) Project, aimed at expanding rural electrification.

Future collaborations will focus on technology transfer and investment in Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.
