The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and its partners have launched five mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, with a combined capacity of 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d).

The groundbreaking ceremony, which took place on Thursday, marked the commencement of construction works on the five Mini-LNG plants, namely: NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete.

According to Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Ltd, the projects play a critical role in increasing access to energy for millions of Nigerians, providing job opportunities, promoting economic growth, and contributing to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“These mini LNG facilities will ensure the efficient transportation of gas over long distances, providing a cleaner and cheaper source of energy to households, mobility, industries, and businesses,” Kyari said.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the development as an unprecedented feat in the history of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Ekpo assured NNPC Ltd and its partners of the Federal Government’s support, stressing that the initiatives align with the government’s aspirations of harnessing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for national economic development.

Mr. Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, in a statement noted that the company’s renewed focus on gas and power projects is informed by its commitment to support the Federal Government’s drive towards improving Nigeria’s power generation, engendering industrialization, and fostering economic growth and development.

“We are deliberately keying into that agenda, and that is evident by the network of our gas pipeline infrastructure which is well-spread across the country,” Soneye said.
