Just in: Journalists, others undergo security screening at Lagos Assembly ahead of plenary

The Lagos State House of Assembly has significantly tightened its security measures on Monday, January 27, as lawmakers prepare for a plenary session.

Policemen and security officials are meticulously screening journalists and other individuals attempting to enter the complex.

At the main gate, up to three police vehicles are stationed, with additional security vehicles spotted inside the complex.

Meanwhile, at the second gate, a long queue of journalists has formed, awaiting security clearance while identity cards are being thoroughly scrutinized, and those unable to provide proper means of identification are being denied entry.

Today’s plenary session is set to take place amidst controversy stirred by ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s claim over the weekend that he remains the speaker of the House.

Obasa claimed that his removal was illegal, citing that it was carried out unconstitutionally and with a fake mace.

He also denied allegations of corruption, describing the alleged financial misappropriations as “impossible,” and urged lawmakers to follow the proper procedure to remove him from office.

Obasa also accused the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Ishola Olawale of leading an invasion of the Assembly and his residence on the day of his removal.

He alleged that over 200 policemen stormed his homes in Agege and GRA, blocking the gates and restricting his family’s movement.

He said: “My children did not sleep in this house on that day because they were locked out, and my wife kept inside house arrest.”

Persecondnews reported that Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13, 2025, due to some infractions and allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, and was replaced by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.
