The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, is set to embark on a significant two-day official visit to Nigeria, commencing on Thursday.

The National Information Officer, United Nations Information Centre, Dr. Oluseyi Soremekun, announced this on Tuesday.

During her visit, Mohammed will engage in high-level discussions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, senior government officials, and the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) to address pressing issues of regional stability and development.

She will be accompanied by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa, and the Sahel, Leonardo Simão and the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall.

As part of her visit, Mohammed will also meet with the UN country team in Nigeria to assess the progress of current projects and discuss future objectives, ensuring the United Nations’ efforts in the country remain effective and aligned with emerging needs.

The statement said: “The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed will on Thursday, January 9, 2025 begin a two-day official visit to Nigeria.

“While in Nigeria, she will have a series of meetings, including with H.E. President Bola Tinubu, senior Government officials as well as the senior leadership of the Economic Community of West African States.

“They will be addressing pressing issues of regional stability and development. Ms Mohammed will also meet with the UN country team in Nigeria.”

Persecondnews recalls that Mohammed had visited Nigeria on December 1, 2021, where she held discussions with the then Minister of Environment, focusing on Nigeria’s climate and environmental concerns.

The meeting also focused on Africa’s pathway to COP27 and Nigeria’s new role as the Chair of the Great Green Wall (GGW) and the commitment made by the President at COP 26 to afforestation across the country.

The Deputy Secretary-General concluded her trip with a visit to the then President Muhammadu Buhari.
