Grace Ike, a journalist with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN), has been elected as the chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council.

She emerged unopposed, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

During her swearing-in on Wednesday, Ike pledged to reposition the NUJ FCT council by introducing innovative projects aimed at advancing the union’s objectives.

She expressed gratitude to her colleagues for their trust and confidence in her leadership.

“With immense gratitude and a profound sense of responsibility, I stand before you today as your elected chairman of the NUJ FCT council,” Ike said in her acceptance speech.

“This moment is both humbling and inspiring, and I thank you sincerely for the trust you have placed in me.”

Ike congratulated the newly elected NUJ national president, Alhaji Yahya Alhassan, and other members of the national executive council, pledging the FCT council’s support for the national body.

She also reserved special praise for the women of the council, whose support she described as pivotal to her victory.

“Your courage, resilience, and support were pivotal to this victory, and I am forever grateful,” she said.

Ike emphasized the importance of collaborative leadership, citing leadership expert John C. Maxwell: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”

She promised to chart a path toward unity, progress, and excellence for the union.

Other members elected into the FCT NUJ executive committee include Yahaya Ndambabo of Voice of Nigeria as vice-chairman, Jide Oyekunle of Independent Newspaper as secretary, and Sandra Udeike of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria as treasurer.

The new leadership will serve an initial three-year term.

Grace Ike previously served as the chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps and vice chair of the FCT Correspondents Chapel.

She has also worked for Independent Television (ITV) and Silverbird Television.
