Brighton stun Manchester City with 2-1 comeback win

1.4k

Brighton & Hove Albion pulled off a stunning 2-1 comeback win over Manchester City at the Amex Stadium, condemning Pep Guardiola’s side to a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.

Premier League debutant Matt O’Riley proved the hero, scoring the winner in the 83rd minute after Joao Pedro’s equalizer had cancelled out Erling Haaland’s first-half opener.

Manchester City started strongly, with Savinho forcing a smart save from Bart Verbruggen and Haaland ballooning a volley wide.

After Verbruggen smothered his initial shot, the Norwegian eventually broke the deadlock by poking home his 12th Premier League goal of the season.

Brighton upped the pressure in the second half, utilizing width to their advantage and peppering crosses into the box.

Joao Pedro capitalized on a scramble to fire in the equalizer in the 78th minute, setting the stage for O’Riley’s dramatic winner.

Matt O’Riley, returning from injury, made an instant impact off the bench, scoring the winner with a composed finish past Ederson.

The substitute’s goal sent the Amex Stadium into raptures and lifted Brighton to fourth in the Premier League table.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have now lost four consecutive games in all competitions, a first in his managerial career.

Despite Guardiola’s insistence that City are not in a “dark place,” the team’s struggles continue, with injury troubles and uncharacteristic disorganization contributing to their downfall.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side, who had stalled in recent weeks, proved their mettle with a resilient performance.

Brighton’s defence held firm in the final moments to secure a famous victory, demonstrating their ability to compete with top-tier teams.

Manchester City’s loss allows Liverpool to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League table.

With tough games against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool looming, Guardiola’s side must regroup and rediscover their winning form to stay in the title race.

The international break provides a timely opportunity for City to reassess and recharge.
