The Nigerian senior men’s football team, the Super Eagles, are currently stranded in Libya ahead of their AFCON 2025 qualifier against Libya.

The team left for Libya on Sunday afternoon after winning 1-0 in Uyo, only to have their aircraft unexpectedly diverted to Al Abaq airport, more than two hours away from their original destination, Benghazi.According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the diversion occurred just an hour before landing, sparking confusion and frustration among players and officials.

Videos shared by the NFF show the team visibly exhausted attempting to resolve the situation at the airport.

The sudden change in plans for the Super Eagles’ fourth Group D match against Libya in Benina has raised concerns about the team’s safety and well-being.

Libyan authorities have effectively held the team hostage at Al Abaq airport, leaving their participation in the match uncertain.

This development has sparked outrage, with many questioning the motives behind the diversion and the treatment of the Nigerian team.

The NFF is working to resolve the situation, but the delay has already caused significant disruption to the team’s preparations.
