The Senate has summoned the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, over the deplorable condition of the Old Oyo-Ogbomosho road linking the north and south of the country.

Sen. Buhari Abdulfatai (APC-Oyo North), who voiced concern over the deteriorating state of the road, moved a motion of urgent public importance that led to the decision to invite the minister.

According to the lawmaker, the critical route that connects the South and North has become a significant source of hardship and danger for travellers.

He said: “For over 10 years, despite the Federal Government initiating major repairs on the road, it remains in a deplorable state, resulting in regular accidents and daily gridlock caused by articulated vehicles.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the plenary session, directed the Committee on Works to report to the House in three weeks.

The Senate also passed, for second reading, a bill for the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State.

While leading the debate on the bill, Senate Leader Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti-Central) said the establishment of the university was part of the government’s ongoing efforts to diversify the nation’s economy.

Several senators, including the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Sen. Solomon Olamilekan, supported the bill.

They called for more efforts and initiatives, such as the proposed university, to develop agriculture and promote technology-driven farming.

“We should have more of this. This is a very important bill, and we should all support it,” Jibrin urged his colleagues.
