Liverpool’s latest signing, Federico Chiesa, has stated that he had no hesitation when the option to join Liverpool arose.

Liverpool officially announced the signing of Chiesa on Thursday, after the Italian put the finishing touches to his transfer from Juventus by signing a long-term contract with the Reds.

Speaking after signing for Liverpool, the Italy international said that he joined the Reds because of the club’s history and what its fans represent.

“I’m so happy to be a Liverpool player. When Richard Hughes called me and he said, ‘Do you want to join Liverpool?’—and the coach called me—I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club; I know what it represents to the fan,” Chiesa told Liverpool’s website.

“So, I’m so happy, and I can’t wait to get started. Well, we were all happy. Fortunately enough, as I said before, it was an easy decision because of Liverpool and everything. We enjoyed every bit.

“I still need to talk to my family because today was a really busy day. But I’m grateful because my wife is here with me, and she was amazing because as soon as I said Liverpool, she said, ‘Yes, I’m coming with you. It’s a fantastic opportunity for your career and for our family.”

The Reds secured Chiesa’s signature for a remarkably modest fee of £11 million ($14 million), edging out Barcelona, who struggled to finalize the deal due to ongoing financial issues.

The Italian had less than 12 months in his contract at Turin, and Juventus were eager to offload the player to avoid the risk of losing him for free next summer.

He has opted for the No. 14—the same number he wears for Italy.
