The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has upheld the status of Mr. Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State, dismissing an appeal filed by the Edo State House of Assembly that sought to challenge his reinstatement.
The court affirmed the previous ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which had nullified Shaibu’s impeachment and directed his prompt restoration to the office of Deputy Governor.
The court warned that any individual aside from Shaibu parading himself as Deputy Governor would face legal consequences.
This latest turn of events follows the Edo State House of Assembly’s impeachment of Philip Shaibu on April 8, which was based on allegations including perjury and the unauthorized disclosure of confidential government information.
However, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court declared that the impeachment process violated procedural requirements and subsequently ordered Shaibu’s reinstatement.
Additionally, the court nullified the appointment of Mr. Omobayo Godwins as the replacement Deputy Governor, effectively reinstating Philip Shaibu to the position.
The court further directed the Inspector General of Police to provide adequate security for Shaibu, ensuring his safe return to office and enabling him to carry out his duties as Deputy Governor for the remainder of his term.
