The Federal Government says it has begun the dualization of the 375.9-km Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road with a completion date of May 2025.

The Minister of Works, Mr. David Umahi, announced this at the inauguration ceremony and site handover of the 38-kilometre dual carriageway section of the road to Dangote Group of Companies on Saturday.

The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway is a 375.9-km transportation artery that connects Nigeria’s capital city to major commercial and industrial centres in the north.

The road, which traverses many states and local governments, has been plagued by heavy traffic and deterioration.

In response to the situation, the federal government initiated a comprehensive rehabilitation program, aiming to transform the infrastructure into a world-class facility.

The initiative seeks to enhance road safety, decrease travel durations, and stimulate economic growth in the region, notwithstanding the prevailing security concerns and economic importance.

“We are determined to complete this project within the shortest possible time. We will review the project rate to cushion the effects of the increase in material costs, given the last review that was done about 9 months ago,” Umahi said in a statement by Mr. Uchenna Orji, the Special Adviser on Media.

The minister also introduced “Operation Free Our Roads,” a federal government program aimed at making all federal roads under construction accessible and safe for use, beginning with the present rainy season.

He explained: “We will use the stone base to fill all potholes and maintain one carriageway for vehicles to follow while consistently working on the other carriageway.”

The minister lauded Julius Berger Plc for their swift start and excellent work on the portion of the project assigned to them.

He emphasized the need for the Ministry’s engineers and Federal Emergency Management Agency officials to take the task seriously, ensuring the project’s completion by May 2025.
