Mr. Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, has commended the media for its crucial contribution to combating terrorism.

Idris acknowledged the significant impact of responsible reporting on shaping public perception and undermining terrorist groups’ narratives.

The minister warned that the spread of false information and fake news can have equally devastating consequences as terrorist attacks.

Idris spoke at the opening session of a two-day training workshop with the theme, “Effective Reporting Towards Strengthening Alternatives to Terrorist Ideologies,” organized for defense correspondents and reporters by the Office of the National Security Adviser.

He said: “The media holds immense power to influence minds, shape narratives, and promote peace.”

The minister underscored the crucial role of media coverage in shaping public perceptions of terrorism and national security matters.

He praised the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for their proactive and collaborative approach to engaging with the media, which he noted was essential in promoting informed reporting and countering harmful narratives.

He recognized the commendable efforts of the NCTC and ONSA in combating terrorism, highlighting their notable achievements in successfully rescuing numerous kidnapping victims through daring operations.

“Thank you for your dedication and service to the nation.”

Idris emphasized the importance of winning the ideological war against terrorism, urging the media to play a critical role in promoting counter-narratives that are both appealing and persuasive, as well as offering a positive, inclusive alternative to the destructive ideologies perpetuated by terrorist groups.

“Terrorism is not merely a physical threat; it is an ideological battle of the mind,” he said.

He appealed to journalists to collaborate with a diverse range of experts, including security specialists, sociologists, psychologists, and community leaders, to provide a nuanced and multidimensional understanding of terrorism and its counter-narratives, fostering a more informed and comprehensive public discourse.

Idris urged the media to highlight the effective initiatives and programmes implemented by the NCTC and ONSA that successfully counter radicalization and facilitate the rehabilitation and reintegration of former terrorists back into their communities.

He also urged them to utilise data-driven research and in-depth analysis to enhance the accuracy, credibility, and impact of their reporting, providing a more comprehensive understanding of these critical efforts.

The minister, however, warned against sensationalism and the spread of misinformation.

He said: “Sensational reporting can inadvertently glorify terrorist acts and spread fear. Misinformation and fake news can be as damaging as terrorist acts themselves.

“Let me also use this platform to reiterate the commitment of President Tinubu’s administration to free and responsible journalism. We sincerely appreciate your work, and we will continue to support you through access to accurate information, regular media briefings, and training opportunities such as this workshop.

“The media holds an immense power to influence minds, shape narratives, and promote peace.

“Together, we can create a strong, united front against terrorism. President Tinubu administration is committed to supporting free and responsible journalism through access to accurate information and regular training opportunities. Together, we can create a strong, united front against terrorism.”
